Moraga, CA - Junior center fielder Tiffany Redding led the Saint Mary's softball team (8-23) with two runs in a 5-1 victory over the Humboldt State Lumberjacks on Tuesday from Cottrell Field in Moraga.
Humboldt State opened the game with its only run, and unearned run, off winning pitcher Jordan Larsen. Lumberjacks first baseman Rene Rodriguez had a two-out triple and scored on an error one batter later. Larsen allowed just four hits in the next four innings as she improved her record to 4-6 on the season.
Saint Mary's gave Larsen a two-run cushion in the bottom half of the first as the Gaels pushed across three runs in the inning. Talaya Turner singled to open the inning and advanced to third when Kami Gray reached in an error trying to bunt Turner to second. After Gray stole second, Jennifer Arnold singled to center to push Turner home. Redding then singled to left field to plate gray from third and Arnold from second to give SMC a 3-1 and Larsen all the support she needed.
Saint Mary's added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jordann Bass, who walked to open the inning, scored on a bunt by Turner. Staci Hamaguchi, who reached on an error, scored when Gray singled to left field with one out.
Larsen pitched five innings allowing one unearned run with one strikeout and three walks. Jennifer Eaton relieved Larsen for the final two innings. Easton pitched two scoreless inning but did surrender three walks.
Shona Guevara suffered the loss for Humboldt State, dropping her record to 11-6 on the season. Jodie Bland relieved Guevara in the fifth inning and tossed 1.2 inning of scoreless relief.
Saint Mary's will host BYU in a doubleheader on Friday, March 22 at Cottrell Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
