Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's tennis team (6-9) was defeated by the University of Hawaii, 5-2, in a none-conference tennis match from the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on Thursday. Saint Mary won the doubles point, but Hawaii took 5-of-6 singles matches in the victory.
The Gaels took two of three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day. The number-one pair of Frank Schmitt and Arturo Planell defeated Malino Uda and Lincoln Leeder 8-6. J.J Whitlinger and Thomas Burgemeister secured the point with an 8-3 win at number-two doubles.
The only singles win for Saint Mary's came at the number-three spot where Planell made quick work of Uda, 6-1, 6-2. Saint Mary's had first set leads at the number-one and number-two spots, but Hawaii's Reginaldo Moralejo defeated Schmitt 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at number-one. Justin Menolussino also pulled out a three-set win, at number-two, over Burgemeister, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) and 6-4.
The number-four singles match was also a three-set affair. Hawaii's Francisco Brignole defeated Filip Sarovic 6-4, 4-6, and 6-2. The number-five and six singles matches were straight set winners for UH.
