Moraga, CA- The number two seeded Saint Mary's softball team (17-37) fell to Santa Clara (25-38) in the elimination round of the Western Intercollegiate Softball League (WISL) Tournament by a score of 7-1.
Rachel Sherman led the Broncos at the plate as she went 2-for-3 with one double and three RBI. The Broncos took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as Sherman singled to give the Broncos their first hit of the day. In the third inning, the Broncos improved their lead as Sherman hit a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Kristi Harrington from third. In the sixth inning the Broncos combined for four more runs on four hits, taking advantage of two Gael errors. With the win, Santa Clara advanced to the championship game.
The Gaels only run came in the third inning when Lauren Capoccia scored from second off of a Kami Gray single. The Gaels combined for only three hits against Santa Clara pitcher Deanna Rodriguez.
Sara Wiedlin suffered the loss for the Gaels as she pitched three innings, allowing two hits, two walks, and three earned runs. She finishes the season with a 3-9 record.
In the second game of the day, Loyola Marymount (38-34) shutout San Diego (14-40) by a score of 1-0. With the win, LMU advanced to the championship game as the number one seed. The Lions were led by Casie Phillips as she went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Anna Russell suffered the loss for the Toreros as she pitched the complete game, allowing one run on two hits with three walks. She completes the season with a 7-18 record.
In the championship game of the WISL Tournament, Santa Clara dominated Loyola Marymout in the 12-5 victory. The Broncos took an early lead in the first inning as they combined for three runs on one hit. SCU added three more runs in the second and two more runs in the third to take a 8-2 lead. With four more runs added in the sixth, the Broncos lead was enough for the win.
Coresta Salas proved to be the biggest offensive threat as she went 4-for-4 with one double, one triple, and four RBI for the Broncos. Lacey Smale went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one walk, while for LMU Trisha Gomes went 2-for-4 with one double. Kelley Johnson earned the victory for the Broncos and improves her record to 6-10.
