San Bruno, CA – Saint Mary's sophomore Louella Tomlinson was named the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year and also garnered All-WCC First Team recognitions, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon. This is the second straight season that the forward has been acknowledged by the conference, earning WCC All-Freshman honors last season.
This season Tomlinson has been a continual force on the defensive end, compiling 154 blocks for a 5.3 block per game average. Tomlinson is second in the nation in blocks per game this season, and is two blocks away from tying her previous WCC record of a 156 blocks in a season. In conference games only the Aussie totaled 73 blocks, beating her previous record of 68.
With 310 total blocks in her career Tomlinson ranks second in the WCC record books, and with two more years ahead of her, needs just 63 blocks to hold the conference career record. In WCC games only Tomlinson already holds the record, accumulating 141 blocks against conference opponents, breaking the previous career record of 122 blocks (Tricia Gibson '87-'91) in just two seasons of play.
Tomlinson's game has developed quickly over the last year, as the sophomore has done more for the Gaels than block shots. This year Tomlinson not only led Saint Mary's in blocks, but was crucial to the Gaels' scoring and rebounding. Tomlinson paced the team in points (15), rebounds (9.3), blocks (5.3), and was second in assists (57) and third in steals (28). In conference play Tomlinson was even better, averaging a double-double with 16.3 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.
Tomlinson and the fifth seeded Gaels will look to advance in the West Coast Conference Championships this weekend, facing the eighth seeded Santa Clara Broncos in the first round. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 PM on Friday, March 6 at the Orleans Arena.
