
Mickey McConnell Nominated For Bob Cousy Award

Springfield, MA - Senior point guard Mickey McConnell has been nominated to the Bob Cousy Award. The Bob Cousy Award is given to the top collegiate male basketball point guard annually spanning across all divisions within the game by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The selection criteria emphasize leadership, team work, success, and fundamentals as being critical parts for the game of basketball as a point guard. Nominations are solicited from across the country from head coaches and the winner is selected by a Blue Ribbon Selection Committee made up of the biggest names in college basketball.
This original list of candidates will be narrowed down to a final 20 by January 3rd, final 10 by February 3rd, and final five by March 3rd. A Hall of Fame appointed screening committee will be narrowing down the candidates from 20 to 10 to 5 prior to a Blue Ribbon Selection Committee evaluating the final five candidates and ultimately choosing the winner.
Both of the Hall of Fame committee's are made up of top college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, Sports Information Directors and Hall of Famers. The winner of the 2011 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the Hall of Fame's Class Announcement on Monday April 4th in Houston as part of NCAA Final Four weekend.
Through 11 games this season, McConnell is averaging 12.8 points per game scoring 141 points. He is shooting 52.3 percent, going 46-for-88 from the floor, while hitting nearly 50 percent from 3-point range, going 27-for-55 (49.1 percent). He has scored double figures in eight of 11 games this season, including 18 points in the thriller over Long Beach State last Saturday. His 49 assists on the year ranks tied for 77th in the country. For his career, he has tallied 319 assists, which ranks eighth all-time. McConnell has also been nominated to the Lowe's Senior Class Award.
Previous winners of the Bob Cousy Award include: Jameer Nelson (St. Joseph's), Raymond Felton (North Carolina), Dee Brown (Illinois), Acie Law (Texas A & M), DJ Augustin (Texas), Ty Lawson (North Carolina) and Greivis Vasquez (Maryland).
