
Men's Tennis Drops Match To Sacramento State, 6-1

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's men's tennis team had won two straight 6-1 matches coming into today, but this time they were on the wrong side of the score, dropping a 6-1 match to Sacramento State on Thursday. In a makeup game originally scheduled for March 12, the Gaels were swept in doubles play and Sherif Hamdy was the lone Saint Mary's player to capture a singles win. With the loss the Gaels dropped to 5-12, while Sacramento State improved to 13-7 on the year.
In doubles action, Saint Mary's dropped the first match of the day on court two, as Andrea Zannoni and Michael Carreno were topped by Anton Stryhas and Holden Ching, 8-6. In the No. 1 spot, Lucas Tirelli and Gavin Leon dropped an 8-4 match to Kiryl Harbatsiuk and Marko Starcevic. To complete the doubles sweep for the Hornets, Jimmy Roberts and Jason Smith defeated Steven Dawson-Roberts and Sherif Hamdy in a tight match at the three position, 9-7.
With a 1-0 lead, Sacramento State quickly added to that lead as Zannoni was defeated by No. 74 Harbatsiuk at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-4, and Leon dropped a 6-3, 6-3 match to Ching at the four position. Carreno was then topped by Lantin on court six, 6-2, 6-2, while Starcevic defeated Youssef El Bouzkouri at the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-4. Tirelli had a chance to win his match in the second set, but eventually dropped a close three-set match to Stryhas on court two, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-8. The lone Gael point of the day came from Hamdy, who topped Smith, 7-5, 4-6, 10-5. The win was Hamdy's third straight singles victory.
The Gaels will return to action on Tuesday, April 13 for another match that was cancelled earlier in the season due to rain. The Gaels take on the Pacific Tigers at 3 p.m. from Korth Tennis Complex.
