| MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team dropped its West Coast Conference opener to Loyola Marymount 65-53 on Thursday night at McKeon Pavilion. The game was tied at 38-38 with 10:19 remaining, but the Lions outscored the Gaels 27-15 down the stretch to close the game. The loss drops Saint Mary's to 8-8, 0-1 WCC, while LMU improves to 7-8, 1-0 WCC. SMC was led by Jasmine Smith with 15 points, while Suzie Davis tied a career-high with 13 points and three rebounds. Louella Tomlinson scored eight points with seven rebounds and Danielle Mauldin scored three points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds. Loyola Marymount was led by Renahy Young with 21 points and Candice Nichols with 16 points. Jessica Vargas came off the LMU bench to score 14 points. Saint Mary's scored the first bucket of the game which ended up being the only SMC lead of the night. LMU quickly opened up a 21-9 lead with 10:24 remaining in the first-half. Trailing 28-15 with 5:40 remaining, Kate Gaze hit a jumper with 4:57 remaining that sparked an 8-0 run that pulled the Gaels within five points at 28-23. LMU would score the final basket of the second-half for the 30-23 lead at halftime. In the second-half, the Gaels tied the game at 35-35 on Davis' lay-up with 12:23 remaining in the game. SMC trailed 42-41 after Smith hit a three-pointer with 8:36 remaining. After the Lions scored two baskets, SMC again cut the deficit down to one point at 45-44 after an Alex Carbonel basket in the paint with 6:38 remaining. |
