
GOLF | Bungert Leads Gaels On First Day At Bandon Dunes

BANDON, Ore. -- Saint Mary's senior Alex Bungert fired an even-par 71 and is in a four-way tie for 11th place after the first round of the Bandon Dunes Championships today at Pacific Dunes.
The Gaels sit in sole possession of sixth place with a team score of 7-over par, two strokes behind Oregon and three from fourth-place Washington State. The University of Missouri leads the 3-day tournament with a 3-under par 281, while Utah Valley sits in second and Colorado is in third.
Individually, Bungert is tied with Colorado's Yannik Paul, Washington's Jonathan Sanders and Oregon's Zach Foushee in a tie for 11th place. Host Gonzaga's Peter Gullickson, Missouri's Emilio Cuartero and J.T. Timmons from Utah Valley lead the individual competition at 4-under par 67.
SMC seniors Cody Robinson and Dalan Refioglu are in a 12-golfer tie for 15th place at 1-over par 72m, while junior Tye Gabriel is tied for 58th at 4-over and sophomore Maclayne Marr is tied for 67h at 7-over.
The Gaels are paired with golfers from Washington, UC Davis and Utah Valley in tomorrow's second round and will tee-off from the back nine beginning at 8:30 a.m. The tournment concludes with a final round on Tuesday.
A native of Orange, Calif., Bungert finished the front nine at even par after posting three birdies and three bogeys. He went to 1-under after a birdie on the par 3 10th hole, but a bogey on the 16th hole put him back at even par for the round.
