Perry Cohen '18 finished third in a field of 215 of the world's best amateur men's golfers last week at the World Amateur Team Championships.
MAYNOOTH, Ireland — Former Gael Perry Cohen put on a spectacle at this year's World Amateur Team Championships, finishing tying for third in field of 215 different competitors representing 72 different countries.
Cohen, who graduated last spring, competed for Team Switzerland and led his squad to tie for 15th. The Saint Mary's alum had round scores of 65-72-68-68 for a combined total of 17-under par. Cohen posted the same score as Team USA member, Justin Suh (USC), who was rated by Golfstat.com as the No. 2 collegiate golfer from last season.
The World Amateur Team Championships were held in Maynooth, Ireland this year, a city just outside of Dublin, from Sept. 5-8. The tournament is comprised of teams of the best three amateur golfers from many nations competing for one combined team score. The biennial tournament changes location each year and will be played in Hong Kong in 2020 and France in 2022. The men's tournament is known as the Eisenhower Trophy and this year's contest was the 31st time it occured.
Cohen will go down in Saint Mary's history as one of the program's most decorated golfers. He was the first and only Gael to date to be named All-WCC First Team all four years and finished second in last year's WCC Championship Tournament. The San Diego native recorded numerous top-5 finishes as a Gael including a fourth and fifth place finish at the WCC Championships as a freshman and sophomore, respectively, and also placed tied for seventh at the NCAA West Regionals in 2015.
The Saint Mary's golf team begins their 2018-19 season next week on Sept. 17 at the Ute Invitational in Driggs, Idaho. More information about the tournament and the Gaels' upcoming competitions can be found on the team's schedule page.
