SAN BRUNO, Calif. — With professional sports starting to return, the West Coast Conference decided to turn its weekly "Player of the Week" award into the "Alumni Player of the Week" award, presented by University Credit Union. Each week, the conference selects one former WCC student-athlete who is currently competing at the professional level and had a standout week. Former Gael pitcher Corbin Burnes, now with the Milwaukee Brewers, was named this week's WCC Player of the Week.
Burnes was a bright spot on the mound for the Brewers in a pair of outings this past week. On August 3, he tossed 3.2 innings of relief against the Chicago White Sox with five strikeouts. He followed that up with 5.1 innings of relief against the Cincinnati Reds, with eight strikeouts, the second most of his young big-league career. Across both outings, he threw nine innings while allowing just three runs, five walks, and 13 strikeouts. After getting an early start against the Chicago Cubs, Burnes has settled into a relief role and seems to have found his stride.
Burnes was a fourth-round selection by the Brewers in 2016 after an impressive junior campaign with the Gaels. Burnes was twice named an All-American (Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper) that year after going 9-2 with a 2.48 ERA and 120 strikeouts. He was named First Team All-West Coast Conference while helping lead SMC to its first-ever WCC regular season championship, first-ever WCC Tournament appearance and subsequently its first-ever tournament title, which led to the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Burnes is the sixth recipient of this newly-created weekly award from the WCC, and the first who is currently in Major League Baseball.
