MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's golf team has put together a solid start to their 2024 fall campaign and at the center of their success is junior golfer Aidan Lee who earned his first collegiate victory last week at the Mark Simpson Invitational. As a result, Lee was named this week's Shamrock Office Solutions Student-Athlete of the Week for the first time in his Gaels career.
Last week, Saint Mary's recorded their second top-five finish of the fall season with a third place finish at the Mark Simpson Invitational. Aidan Lee led the charge finishing the three round event at 13-under-par good for a three-way tie for first place. Tournament host Colorado would allow for a one hole playoff and Lee and UTEP's Dylan Teeter would go on to par 18 to finish as co-individual champions for Lee's first collegiate win. His 13-under three round performance also went down as a new career best in his third year as a Gael.
Lee's low round of the tournament came on Monday morning with a 66 (-6) and he then followed it up with a 69 and then a final round 68 to get into the three-way tie for first. Lee led the field in par 5 scoring at a whopping 10-under-par and also tied the tournament lead with 16 birdies and two eagles. ""Aidan was on his game this week", said head coach Scott Hardy. "He showed leadership and displayed his ability to score in a variety of ways. I was particularly happy to see his wedge play take a step forward. Winning a college tournament is hard, especially in a large 104 player field like this. All of us were excited for Aidan and know more good golf is to come from him".
The Gaels return to the bay area today to compete in their third straight event of the season at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational hosted by Cal. First round action is scheduled for Monday, October 7th and live scoring and round-by-round leaderboards can be found at smcgaels.com.
