Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's College Director of Athletics Carl R. Clapp announced the hiring of Trisha Dean as interim head softball coach for the 2002 season. Dean earns the position after one season on the coaching staff.
"I'm looking forward to the challenge of coaching at Saint Mary's," said head coach Trisha Dean. "I'm excited to begin my coaching career at my alma mater. The team is ready to pick up where they left off last season and I look forward to moving Saint Mary's softball to the next level."
Dean has been coaching since 1995, when she began giving private pitching lessons and participating in youth clinics. Last season, her first year as an assistant on the Gael coaching staff, Dean's duties included coaching pitchers, working with outfielders, and assisting with hitters. Off the field, she also helped with recruiting.
"In looking to find a leader for our softball program, our search began and ended with Trisha Dean," said Director of Athletics Carl R. Clapp. "Trisha was one of the best players to wear a Saint Mary's uniform and we anticipate her being equally impressive in her new position."
As a player for Saint Mary's, Dean holds several career offensive records, including batting average (.364), hits (230), doubles (62), and at-bats (632). She also holds the school record for single season batting average after hitting .435 in 1998, and leading the nation in doubles (25) that same year. Dean is also the only female athlete at Saint Mary's to have her number retired.
