Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team (13-16) split a doubleheader with Portland State on Saturday, April 6. The Gaels lost the first game 3-2 in nine innings and then won the second game 3-2 as Tiffany Redding (Placerville, CA) tripled down the right field line to score Kami Gray and Talaya Turner for the win.
The Vikings took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning as they combined for three hits in the inning. The Gaels responded in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded, Jennifer Arnold (Oakley, CA) put down a sacrifice bunt that scored Tuner to tie the game.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Vikings put up two more runs off of a double from Monica Martell and a single from Kayla Lewis. In the bottom of the inning, the Gaels managed only one run. Lauren Capoccia's (Sierra Madre, CA) sacrifice bunt scored Claudia Williams (Rodeo, CA) to cut the Vikings' lead to 3-2. The Gaels were unable to score again, falling 3-2.
In the nightcap, the Gaels went into the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 2-1. With two outs, Redding tripled down the right field line to score Gray and Turner to win the game. Redding completed the game 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Gray was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with one walk, one RBI and one run scored. Turner went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
With the loss, Jennifer Eaton (Palo Cedro, CA) falls to 5-13 on the season as she gave up two runs on 15 hits, with one walk and six strikeouts.
With the win, pitcher Jordan Larsen (Chico, CA) improves to 6-8 on the season. Larsen allowed two runs on 10 hits, with three strikeouts.
The Gaels return home to Cottrell Field on Wednesday, April 17 for a doubleheader against UC Santa Barbara. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
