Stevinson, CA - At the 10th Annual Colorado-Stevinson Ranch Invitational, the No. 43 ranked Saint Mary's men's golf team posted a second place finish in the 14-team field. The Gaels posted rounds of 295-286-299 for a 54-hole total of 880 (+16). The Saint Mary's finished eight shots behind tournament winner New Mexico State, which posted a final round 289, which was 10 shots better than the Gaels' total on Tuesday.
Saint Mary's entered the final round with a two shot lead over the Aggies, but could not hold onto its lead to win back-to-back tournaments. The Gaels shot 11-over par on Tuesday, as none of the five players in the line-up were able to break par at the difficult Stevinson Ranch Golf Course that was playing 7,144 yards.
Only seven golfers in the 74-player field were able to break par, and Oklahoma City University's Anthony Michael shot a tournament low 66 on Tuesday to take home medalist honors, with a three-shot win over SMC's Mike McRae and Chadd Cocco, and New Mexico State's Timothy Madigan.
Both McRae and Cocco were tied for the lead after 36 holes, as they had a one-shot lead over Matt Edwards of New Mexico. McRae, who has now posted three straight second place finishes, posted a round of 2-over par 74 on Tuesday, to fall to 1-over par for the tournament. McRae posted rounds of 73-69-74 for a 54-hole total of 215 (-1)
Cocco's second place finish marked his best finish of the 2007-08 season, and second top-5 finish during his senior season. He posted a third place finish in the first tournament of the season, the Saint Mary's Invitational, but had just one top-10 finish in his last seven tournaments. Cocco carded round of 73-68-74 for a 215 (-1) finish at Stevinson Ranch.
Daniel Cone matched McRae and Cocco with a final round 74 as well. The sophomore from Moraga finished tied for 30th overall with a three-round total of 227 (+11). Cone opened the tournament with rounds of 78 and 75 on Monday. Robert McRae finished one shot ahead of Cone, and finished tied for 26th overall. McRae had rounds of 75 and 74 on Monday, and closed the tournament with a 5-over par 77 on Tuesday.
Wrapping up the team's play for the tournament was senior Josh Kelly who also shot 77 (+5) on Tuesday. Kelley finished tied for 39th with a tournament score of 229 (+13). Kelly had rounds of 75 and 77 on Monday.
Richard Conlin, who was playing as an individual, carded a final round 77. Conlin opened the tournament with an 8-over par 80 in the morning round on Monday, but withdrew from the afternoon round.
Saint Mary's will return to action in the West Coast Conference Championships next week. The Gaels will travel to University City, Washington for this year's tournament, which will be played at the Chambers Bay Golf Club. Chambers Bay measures over 7,500 yards from the back tees.
