Keith Berg enters his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Saint Mary's softball team. Berg's primary responsibility is to oversee the pitchers and catchers in practice, game preparation, and competitions.
In 2010, in addition to helping the Gaels to their best finish in program history and first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament, Berg was instrumental in guiding two Gael pitchers to All-Pacific Coast Softball Conference honors. Sophomore Britany Linton was a unanimous selection for PCSC Coastal Division Pitcher of the Year, as well as being named to the first team. Linton led the PCSC in wins with 17, was second in the conference with a 2.70 ERA, and her .259 batting-average-against ranked fourth. Sophomore Jessica Lemmon received PCSC honors as well for her play on the mound, being named to the All-PCSC Second Team.
Berg helped two pitchers earn PCSC nods in 2009 as well, as Maryanne Cronin was named to the second team while Linton was given honorable mention honors. Cronin led the team with a 4-3 PCSC record, while posting a 2.49 ERA in 12 conference appearances. Linton made 11 appearances on the season as a freshman and posted a 3-5 PCSC record with a 2.77 ERA.
In his first season with the Gaels in 2008, Berg guided senior Megan Galloway and Cronin to All-PCSC honors. Galloway was named to the second team after leading the team with a 2.95 ERA and a team-best 13 wins. Cronin displayed great potential in the circle as a freshman, and was named to the honorable mention team following a 10-6 year. In addition, Galloway and Cronin each earned PCSC Pitcher of the Week honors for their performances during the season.
Berg coached for two seasons with the North Texas Mean Green softball team as an assistant coach, working primarily with the pitchers. Berg has over 10 years coaching experience at the college, high school and club levels.
Before his arrival to North Texas, Berg spent a year as an assistant with the Northern Illinois University softball program. In just one season, the Salinas, CA, native helped the Huskies to 10 more wins then the previous year, lowered the pitchers' earned run average from 3.41 to 2.71, and mentored Second-Team All-Mid Athletic Conference honoree Lindsey LaChiana to16 wins.
Berg was a successful high school and club head coach in California. His first stint as a head coach was at North Salinas High School from 2001-2004, where he led the squad to three-straight conference titles. Following the 2002 Central Coast Section Athletic Conference Championship, Berg was honored as the Northern California Coach of the Year by the San Jose Mercury.
Berg also spent five years as a head coach with the Salinas Storm organization, which he founded in 1999. He coached his first team, the 12-and under Storm squad, to a ninth-place finish at the Amateur Softball Association National Tournament. His teams made five trips to the ASA Nationals, including a fourth-place finish with the 16-and-under team at Panama City Beach, FL in 2000.
Berg received his bachelor's degree in sociology from Cal State Monterey Bay in 2001.
