
Cross Country Ends Season at NCAA Western Regionals

Springfield, OR -- The Saint Mary's college men's cross country team concluded their season on Saturday, finishing 25th in the 2009 NCAA Western Regional Championships held in Springfield, OR. Facing off against some of the toughest teams in the country, the Gaels finished the year with a strong showing finishing ahead of conference foe San Diego, and just behind conference rivals Pepperdine, San Francisco and Santa Clara.
Pacing the Gaels in the 10k event was junior Mark Blucher. Blucher finished 105th overall with a time of 33:24.95, which was good enough for a 5:22.7 mile pace. Blucher has finished first for the Gaels in every race this season, capping an impressive junior year. Coming in second for the Gaels was talented sophomore Robb Van Wyck. Van Wyck finished 112th overall with a time of 33:32.75, which is a new personal-record in the 10k.
Rounding out the top-five for the Gaels was junior Bradley Alban who finished 160th overall, with a mile place of 5:42.3, finishing with a new personal-record in the 10k with 35:26.82. A pair of freshman came in fourth and fifth for SMC, James Hays placed 164th overall with a mile pace of 5:44.3, finishing with a time of 35:39.38. Fellow freshman Jordan Lerma placed 172nd in his first experience running a 10k. Lerma ran at a 6:00.9 mile pace, finishing with a time of 37:22.54.
