This past weekend the Saint Mary's Women's soccer team took the field for the first time since their two-win weekend over Pacific and Cal State Bakersfield. They traveled to San Rafael to take on Dominican University and Division II national power Sonoma State. Saint Mary's defeated Dominican 2-0 on Saturday, followed by a 2-2 tie with Sonoma State (2-2), later that day.
The first game was against host Dominican, and the Gaels came out of the gates intending to control the ball and the game, and certainly followed through. "We did a very good job circulating the ball throughout the lines and were able to create numerous numbers up situations on the flank," said head coach, Kai Edwards.
The Gaels got on the board early with a beautiful build up, as striker Jessica Menzhuber turned the corner on her defender and found, Daelyn Paul, for the first goal of the day. This was the first game Daelyn had played since arriving at SMC with a torn ACL as a freshman. The second goal came from a great long diagonal ball hit from Mercede Koning to Ashley Nied for a header goal.
In goal, Natalie Johnston and Tara Larson combined for the shutout. The back four of Mercede Koning, Noelle Brown, Chloe Johnson and Sidney Garza played lock down defense against Dominican limiting them to very few shots throughout the day.
In the second game of the day, Sonoma State jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead ten minutes into the game. The Gaels bounced back, tying the game ten minutes later with a goal from Ashley Soro, which was assisted by Paul. With just 1 minute to go in the half, left back Mercede Koning struck with a BOMB from 35 yards out to the far post to put the Gaels up 2-1 going into half. "We showed character to come back so quickly," said assistant coach, Lindsey Jones, following the game.
The second half went back and forth with both teams creating quality chances. With four minutes remaining, the Gaels gave up a penalty kick, which was stopped by Natalie Johnston to keep the game 2-1. Two minutes later, the Gaels gave up another penalty kick and this one Sonoma State converted, and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
The Gaels will host a spring event on Sunday, April 19 that includes Saint Mary's, Cal Poly, Chico State and the Sacramento Storm. The soccer jamboree will be played at Garaventa Field, and the Gaels will play games against Cal Poly and Division II power and NCAA tournament team Chico State. The day will begin at 10:00 a.m. with SMC and Cal Poly taking the pitch, and the final game of the day will begin at 3:30 p.m.
