
Men's Tennis Edged By Alabama Birmingham, 4-3

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's men's tennis team took the early 1-0 lead against Alabama Birmingham on Wednesday, but the Blazers stormed back to take the 4-3 win. The Gaels won two of three doubles matches to get the first point of the day, but UAB won four of the six singles matches to claim the victory. With the win, UAB improved to 9-5, while Saint Mary's dropped to 3-11 on the season.
In doubles play, the Gaels got off to an early 1-0 lead with wins on courts one and two. In the No. 1 position, Gavin Leon and Lucas Tirelli defeated Danny Manlow and Daniel Moser, 8-3. In the deciding match at the two spot, Andrea Zannoni and Michael Carreno narrowly defeated Alex Emery and Thomas Petrich, 9-8.
In singles action, the Gaels won four of the six first sets, but were only able to record two singles wins on the day. On court two, Tirelli topped Emery, 7-6, 6-3, while Zannoni lost a three-set match to Manlow at the one spot, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. Youssef El Bouzkouri and Carreno both lost two-set matches at the five and six spots, respectively. Leon was the only other Gael to record a singles win on the day, defeating Moser, 6-3, 6-4, on court four. With the team match tied 3-3, Sherif Hamdy was the final Gael on the court, but dropped the match to David Zimmerman at the three spot, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The Gaels will return to action on Saturday, March 27 when they take on UC Riverside. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. from Korth Tennis Complex.
