
Men's Tennis Falls in Opening Round of WCC Championships

San Diego, CA- The Saint Mary's men's tennis team was unable to pick-up a first round victory in the West Coast Conference Championships, falling to Santa Clara 4-0 in the opening round of play on Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Gaels dropped to 5-16 on the season and will play No. 6 Portland in the consolation bracket on Saturday.
In doubles play, the Gaels dropped the doubles point after losing the first two matches. On court one, Gavin Leon and Lucas Tirelli dropped an 8-4 match to Brian Brogan and Jay Wong. The Broncos secured the doubles point at the No. 2 spot, as Andrew Kells and Nico Vinel defeated Andrea Zannoni and Michael Carreno, 8-6.
In singles action, Zannoni dropped his match at the two position to Kyle Dandan, 6-2, 6-2. The Broncos earned the third point of the day on court five, where Youssef El Bouzkouri dropped his match to Vinel, 6-1, 6-0. The Broncos secured the match at the No. 6 spot, as Carreno was defeated by Tom Pham, 6-3, 6-2.
The Gaels will continue play in the WCC Championships on Saturday, April 24, competing in the second match of the day against No. 7 Portland at 11:30 a.m. With a first round loss Saint Mary's will battle for fifth place amongst the eight conference schools.
