LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Despite another good day at the plate, the Saint Mary's softball team was done in by a big inning and fell to New Mexico State, 13-12, in their final game of the Hotel Encanto Invitational. The Gaels finish the first weekend of the season with a 1-4 record after falling to the Lobos on Sunday.
SMC once again had a strong day at the plate, as multiple Gaels put on an offensive show. Sophomore Brittany Sabatini went 2-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored. After hitting two home runs last season, B. Sabatini now has three homeruns through the first weekend of play in 2012.
Sophomore Christine Torrise also hit a three-run blast, while senior Nicole Arce went 2-for-2 with two walks. Seniors Rebecca Sabatini and Mandy Camuso also contributed two RBI apiece.
Michelle Mounts continued her stellar play over the weekend with a 2-for-4 day with an RBI and two runs scored. The senior finished the weekend hitting .688 (11-for-16) with six doubles, one homerun, six RBI, and eight runs scored.
The Gaels jumped out to a quick 4-2 lead through two innings before the Lobos exploded for nine runs in the top of the third. Saint Mary's starter Britany Linton lasted through three hitters in the inning before being replaced by Audrianna Solari. Solari got an initial out before she gave up three runs and was replaced by Jessica Lemmon. The Lobos scored four more runs before the Gaels could get out of the inning.
Saint Mary's got a comeback started in the bottom of the sixth. After a few singles, Camuso got another single to drive in a run before Torrise came up to bat and knocked her three run bomb over the left field fence.
With the Lobos leading 13-11 going into the bottom of the seventh, B.Sabatini hit her second home run of the game to pull the Gaels within one but Saint Mary's was unable to add anymore.
The Gaels will return to the field when they host the PCSC CrossOver Tournament from February 24-26. Saint Mary's will host a total of 12 games over the three-day period at Cottrell Field, while the Gaels will play in four games during the weekend against Northern Colorado (twice), Seattle, and Portland State.
