SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Five Saint Mary's men's soccer players earned all-West Coast Conference recognition by the league's coaches, including first team honorees Alex Braman and Rafael Sanchez.
In addition to first team selections Braman and Sanchez, senior goalkeeper Lucas Champenois earned second-team honors and senior midfielder Cory Schmidt was named honorable mention. Midfielder Stephen Dougherty was named to the all-WCC Freshman Team.
Since becoming SMC's head coach prior to the 2006 season, Adam Cooper has led 21 different players to all-league recognition. In addition, the Gaels have placed a first-year player on the all-freshman team in each of the last six years.
Braman and Sanchez were each recognized as first team selections for the second-straight season. The duo anchored a SMC defensive unit that allowed just four goals against WCC opponents and two in the team's final five matches of the season.
Niwot, Colo. native Braman scored the match-winning goal in the 56th minute in last weekend's 2-0 victory over Portland in the Gaels' final match of the season. Sanchez, a native of Selah, Wash., scored against CSUN and delivered an assist against La Salle.
Champenois concluded his SMC career with one of the best goalkeeping seasons in program history. He led the league in goals against average (.95) and save percentage .806). A native of Mountain View, his 1.23 career goals against average is third in program history.
Schmidt, a native of El Cajon, overcame a serious knee injury to finish second on the team in goals scored (3) and total points (8). He concluded his career by converting an 82nd minute penalty against Portland last weekend.
A true freshman from Pleasanton, Dougherty led the team in minutes played and started 17 of the team's 18 games during the season. He played every minute of the Gaels' seven WCC contests. Dougherty scored the match winner in SMC's 1-0 non-league victory over Canisius.
The Gaels concluded their season last week and, with a 5-2 record, finished just one point away from WCC co-champions San Diego and Santa Clara in the league standings. SMC has finished among the upper half of the league in each of the last five seasons and ended the season in second place for the second-straight year.
