10/16/2019 10:52:00 AM | Cross Country
MORAGA, Calif. – The Gaels Cross Country teams will head to familiar territory as they take on several regionally ranked programs at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational on Saturday.
The Gaels will look for solid performances from their young squad, currently led by sophomores Anthony Vazquez and Kaela Dishion as well as standout freshmen Lucas Chung and Rayna Stanziano. Last time out, Dishion placed 31st with a time of 21:25.6 at the Capital Cross Challenge which now ranks 4th best in program history and was just ahead of freshman Rayna Stanziano (32nd, 5th best in Gaels' history). Freshman Lucas Chung was the Gaels' top finisher at the same race, placing 61st with a time of 25:01.6 while sophomore Anthony Vazquez was nine seconds behind in 76th (25:10.7).
Saint Mary's has had a lot of success on the Baylands Park course in years past, recording a majority of the program's top times in school history at the Bronco Invite. In 2016, Gabe Arias-Sheridan won the Men's invite in a meet record of 23:27.
"The Bronco Invite is a fantastic tune-up before conference," said head coach Marty Kinsey. "We will get to see several WCC, West Region and a few inter-regional teams at the meet. The course is really fast and provides a good confidence boost as our teams head to postseason racing. Coach Montoro and Cushman at Santa Clara have done a superb job providing the Bay Area with a top notch Cross Country event."
Other teams racing at the Bronco Invite include Rice University, Houston, San Jose State, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Pacific, Cal Berkeley, Grand Canyon, Utah Valley, UC Santa Barbara, Hawaii, and Nevada.
