MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary's Rowing team returns to the water this weekend for their first race of what looks to be a strong 2019 season.
The Gaels rounded out their roster this offseason and now have a total of 29 rowers on the team. The team welcomed multiple recruits over the summer: Allison Haggarty, Rosa Nelson, Lina Rak, Vivian Hsu, Mary Elise Conzelmann, and Emma Scanlan. Saint Mary's also has seven seniors (Sedonia Estacio, Jennifer Faulkner, Caroline MacMahon, Katie Pecoraro, Olivia Rooney, Emily Roque-Reinosa, Kelsey Shinn) returning for their final year with the team.
Last season, Saint Mary's recorded a number of impressive finishes including first and second place in multiple races. The varsity eight boat nabbed their best race time of the year at home on March 30 as they took first place (7:00.77) against Santa Clara and Seattle University. At the same race, the Gaels second varsity eight and varsity four boats collected second place finishes. Soon after at the Portland Invite, the varsity eight boat took another first place finish (7:37.61) in tough weather conditions. To round out the year, SMC placed fifth at the West Coast Conference Championship as then-sophomore Emily Sprigings and then-junior Kelsey Shinn were named to the All-WCC team.
The 2019 season begins on September 28 as the Gaels head to Briones Resevoir to race against the California Golden Bears at 8:30 a.m. with three other races planned for the Fall. Saint Mary's will race twice in the month of October at the Head of the Port (Sunday, Oct.13) and the Head of the American (Saturday, Oct. 26) before closing out the first-half with a race on November 9 at the Head of the Lagoon. The Gaels are then scheduled to compete seven times in the Spring including a race with UC Davis, two meets hosted by Sacramento State, a trip to Portland, as well as a meet hosted by SMC against Santa Clara. Saint Mary's will also be returning to the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship in late April for their last competition prior to the West Coast Conference Championship.
