SAN DIEGO — Two Saint Mary's Gaels will be representing the College at the U20 USATF Cross Country National Championships on Saturday in Mission Bay. Freshman student-athletes Rayna Stanziano and Lucas Chung will hit the course as they attempt to qualify for the USA U20 team that will compete in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada at the PanAm Cross Country Championships on February 29.
Both runners were fantastic for the Gaels during their freshmen campaigns. Stanziano competed in all six races for SMC and was inside the top-three on the team during all of them. She paced the Gaels in her collegiate debut as she finished ninth overall the USF Invite on August 31, and again led the Gaels during the WCC Championship in November. Chung was amongst the leaders on the men's side in all six of his races, where he finished first among Gaels on three occasions: the Capital Cross Challenge, Bronco Invite, and the NCAA West Regionals, where he posted a time of 32:25.3.
These two will compete on the course located at Mission Bay Park in beautiful San Diego, and it features a European -style 2,000 meter grass loop along the park. The first half of the course is primarily flat, but the final 1,000 meters features a series of small hills that add a little terrain. Previously, this course was used for the 2008 and 2011 installments of the USATF Cross Country National Championships.
Stanziano and Chung are the first Gaels to compete in the USATF Cross Country National Championships since 2016, when then-freshmen Edward Chance and Mason Labadie represented the Gaels in Bend, Oregon.
The Championships will be streamed live of USATF.TV, with coverage beginning at 11:20 am PT.
