FOSTER CITY, Calif. — For the final time during the fall semester, Saint Mary's Women's Rowing will head out on the water for competition against some of the best in the Bay. The Gaels take part in the annual Head of the Lagoon race on Saturday afternoon at the Foster City Lagoon.

LAST TIME OUT
It's been a while since the Gaels have been in action, when they competed four weeks ago in the Head of the Port race against Sacramento State and UC Davis. The Gaels showed up with a strong showing in their first official competition of the fall season, finishing in second and third with their two boats, trailing on the lone boat of Sacramento State.
Taking on both the single boat of the Hornets and a pair of boats from UC Davis, the Gaels were able to land in second and third place overall in the five-boat race. Their A boat finished the 5000-meter race in 18:44, a mark that was 31 seconds behind the strong performance from Sacramento State, but a solid one by every standard for the Gaels. Their B boat wound up with a time of 20:23, nearly one minute faster than either of the boats from UC Davis.
ABOUT HEAD OF THE LAGOON
This annual race was started by a group of master rowers including Ron Hudson and Daryl Winter. It was named after the Monster from the Blue Lagoon movie, and is now a two-day event that features junior, open, and master teams in addition to collegiate teams. The race will last for 5k, and the Gaels will put two boats in the water against Washington, Cal, Stanford, Sonoma State, and Humboldt State.
