SB | Saint Mary's Takes Down CBU in Five Innings

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (9-13) bounced back with a run-rule win in the second game of Friday's doubleheader to split the day's contests with California Baptist (10-16-1).

GAME 1 RECAP
California Baptist 4, Saint Mary's 3 (8)

The Lancers took the lead in the fourth inning with three runs scored with two outs. Back-to-back singles by Makayla Jordan and Deja Westbrook drove in the runs for CBU.

The Gaels answered back in the sixth inning however with three runs of their own. SMC started the frame with three straight singles to load the bases and then Angelina Franco hit a sacrifice fly to score the team's first run. Julia McCormack added another run with a single to left and then Holly Lusk managed a walk to drive in the third score.

Seven innings was not enough to decide a winner so the two teams went to the eighth with international tie breaker rules in place. CBU scored their fourth score of the game after their leadoff batter bunted the runner on second over to third and then squeezed in the run on a bunt.

Saint Mary's had twice as many hits as California Baptist in the game with 10. McCormack and Indya Smith each had 2-for-4 games in the loss.

GAME 2 RECAP
Saint Mary's 9, California Baptist 1 (5)

The Gaels came out swinging in the second game of the doubleheader and hung a 7-spot on the Lancers in the first inning. SMC scored six of their runs with two outs including a 2-run single by Franco and a 2-run triple by Marissa Nishihara

Saint Mary's tacked on two more runs in the third as McCormack crushed a home run over the scoreboard in left field to put the Gaels up nine. It was the senior's second big fly of the season and the fourth of the year for SMC.

CBU threatened to cut down the Gaels' lead in the following inning with a couple base hits and walks. The Lancers scored one run and had the bases loaded but Kayla Scott entered in relief and induced a forceout at home and a groundout to shortstop to end the threat.

McCormack ended the game with an unassisted double play in the fifth inning that enacted the run rule. The third baseman had another 2-hit game to lead the offense as did Nishihara.

Sofia Earle started in the circle for SMC and struck out seven in 3.1 innings pitched. Scott earned the win with 1.2 scoreless relief innings.

UP NEXT: SANTA CLARA
The Gaels travel to Santa Clara for a non-conference contest next Friday at 4 p.m.
