GOLF | Saint Mary's Tied For Third at The Goodwin

STANFORD, Calif. — Saint Mary's made a massive leap up the leaderboard during the middle round of The Goodwin held at Stanford Golf Course and now sit tied for third place out of 28 teams heading into the final round on Saturday.
LEADERBOARD
The Gaels improved by seven spots in the field from Thursday's round by shooting the fourth best score of the day at 2-over. SMC is now tied alongside No. 12 Pepperdine and Washington for bronze.
Leading the charge in the second round was Blake Hathcoat and Ethan Farnam who each shot 1-under. After finishing yesterday on top of the medalist leaderboard, Hathcoat maintained his position on Friday and heads into the final 18 holes with a one-stroke lead over SMU's Noah Goodwin who is ranked No. 36 in the country. Hathcoat has finished in the top-10 of the team's past two tourneys.
Farnam had the biggest improvement from Thursday of any Gael as he finished six strokes better than yesterday. The senior is tied for 51st out of 146 at 5-over after 36 holes.
Following closely behind is Michael Slesinski who is 6-over and Evan Peterson at 7-over. Ethan Ashbrook rounds out the lineup at 10-over. Both Peterson and Ashbrook counted their scores on Friday by shooting 2-over.
No. 8 Arizona State was 7-under in the second round and now holds a five stroke advantage over host Stanford going into the final day. SMC trails ASU (9-under) by 16 strokes and Stanford (4-under) by 11 strokes.

Saint Mary's will look to secure a top finish at The Goodwin in the final round tomorrow. The Gaels tee off a 1:20 p.m. on hole 1.

- Hathcoat only had two bogeys on his final two holes. It was his first above-par scores of the tournament.
- Four Gaels posted birdies on the 500 yard par 5 16th.
- Ashbrook led the team with five birdies including back-to-back birds on holes 16 and 17.
- SMC has shot 15-under as a team on par 5's so far, tied for first out of the 28 teams.
- Hathcoat ranks second in the field on par 4's (4-under) and tied for third on par 5's (5-under).
