MORAGA, Calif. — Another addition has been made to an already stacked incoming roster for Saint Mary's Softball. The Gaels are pleased to announce that Avrey Wolverton will be heading to California, adding a power bat that will provide some experience inside the circle as the Gaels focus on versatility.
"Avrey completes our 2021 recruiting class, and we are excited to add her to the family," head coach Sonja Garnett said. "She is a spinny and deceptive pitcher who also provides power at the plate."
Wolverton will make the trek out to the Bay Area from her hometown of Brighton, Michigan. She is a 2021 graduate of Howell High School and was a star in both the circle and at the plate for the Highlanders. In the circle, few pitchers were better than Wolverton, posting a 24-2 record in 29 appearances with a 0.61 ERA during the 2021 seasons. What's more impressive is her 321 strikeouts in 148 innings, which amounts to 15 strikeouts per seven-inning game. Twice during the season, she struck out 20, the most in a game in Highlander history.
Her bat isn't too shabby either, posting a .373 batting average with a 1.150 OPS in 40 games, with nine home runs and 48 RBIs. Her sophomore season was when the bat was really on fire, where she cranked out 17 home runs. She concludes her Howell High School career with 33 home runs, which is another school record.
When you post numbers like that, it's no surprise that Wolverton picked up a bevy of awards during her high school career. She was All-KLAA three times (would have been four had it not been for the COVID-19 season), a three-time All-District, All-Region, and All-State performer, and a second-team All-American in 2019. At the statewide level, she has been a Miss Softball nominee, a Detroit Sports Player of the Year nominee, and a Gatorade Player of the Year nominee.
Wolverton plans to major in psychology at Saint Mary's, and aims to become a psychological profiler after graduation.
