SAN MATEO, Calif. – Rayna Stanziano has been named the WCC Cross Country Runner of the Week after winning the Pacific Invite for the second consecutive season.
Stanziano's recognition marks the first time a Gael has won the award for cross country.
After a stellar performance last season in the Pacific Invite, Micke Grove Park once again belonged to Rayna Stanziano. The junior won the 6K Friday evening in a time of 21:36.4, nearly thirty seconds clear of Gaels teammate Molly Dreher who finished second. The standout senior was in full control all race, not only claiming the individual title but helping seal the team title for the Gaels as well.
"She executed the race plan which was to go out fast and run her first mile about the same time it would take for the bronco invite coming up," said Coach Marty Kinsey. "The rest of the race was effort based and to try to chase down the lead bike and work on running mechanics. She did just that and won by about half a minute."
Stanziano and her Gaels teammates will head to the Santa Clara in two weeks' time for the Bronco Invite on October 15.
