ROW | Gaels Take Sixth at WCC Championship, Land Two All-WCC Rowers

FOLSOM, Calif. — The 2021-22 Saint Mary's Rowing season came to a close on Saturday morning with the completion of the 2022 West Coast Conference Championship. Saturday marked the fourth time this season the Gaels have competed on Lake Natoma, and the second competition in a row held on the local course, after the WIRA Championships were two weekends ago. The Gaels finished sixth place overall this year, and landed two on the postseason All-WCC team.

The varsity fours began the morning on the water, and the Gaels posted a time of 9:38.9. Their varsity eight times were better, as the Gaels finished with marks of 8:03.8 (second varsity eight) and 7:28.9 (first varsity eight) to close out the championship. Times were down collectively from the WIRA Championships two weeks ago, but the Gaels finished strong with their varsity eight boat in the last heat of the morning.

Following the event, two Gaels landed on the All-WCC team: Katrina Heffernan and Emily Ferbet. Both rowers were named to the preseason All-WCC team in April, and both followed through with recognition from the conference. Every school was represented on the All-WCC team, with only two teams having more than two rowers on the team (Gonzaga, Creighton).

Gonzaga won the West Coast Conference championship for the seventh-consecutive season, and 20th time overall, but sweeping every race on the morning. Creighton finished in second place overall, with San Diego close behind in third. The Gaels secured sixth place overall after Santa Clara was not counted in the team score because they could not field enough boats.

"Congratulations to both Katrina and Emily – they are awesome representatives of Saint Mary's rowing," said head coach Anna Pytlak. "I am so happy for the both of them. It is a very well-deserved honor."
