NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced their 2022 Track and Field All-Academic teams on Wednesday. Saint Mary's mens' and women's teams made the list as well as Rayna Stanziano being honored individually for the second year in a row.
For teams to qualify, the cumulative GPA for all student-athletes on the roster must be a 3.00 or higher. For individuals, they must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher, participated in any round of the NCAA Championship. In total, more than 150 teams on both the men's and women's sides were honored by the USTFCCCA, and over 800 student-athletes apiece took home recognition for their work in the classroom and on the track.
The men's team registered a cumulative GPA of 3.42, which is a significant jump from their 3.19 mark at the end of 2021. The women put up a cumulative GPA that matched the men at 3.42, also a jump from 3.35 the previous year. Creighton University had the highest cumulative GPA on the men's side, while Portland State took home the honors for the women's side.
Rayna Stanziano was recognized by the USTFCCCA for the second year in a row by being named an All-Academic Athlete. After landing the honors in the fall semester with Cross Country, Stanziano backed up her fall season with an even more impressive spring. While keeping a 3.92 GPA as an English major, Stanziano became the first Gael to qualify for multiple events in the NCAA West Prelims. She set SMC records in the 800m, 1500m, 3000m, and 5000m en route to the most successful season a Gael has had.
