MORAGA, Calif. — There were a number of players who held significant roles in No. 15 Saint Mary's Men's Basketball sweeping through their past week, including a big win over a ranked Gonzaga team. One of those was
Alex Ducas, who was named this week's Bay Alarm Student-Athlete for his performances over the weekend.
Â
Few Gaels have been more consistent this season than the senior out of Geraldton, West Australia. Last week was another example of that, as Ducas scored 18 and 14 points in a pair of Saint Mary's wins to keep them unbeaten in conference play. Ducas made five shots each night, including a four total from beyond the arc, and was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. His game against San Francisco also featured a season-best eight rebounds, part of 14 for the week. For the season, Ducas has scored at least nine points in 23 of 25 games played.
Â
SMC is 10-0 in conference play for the fourth time in program history, with just six games remaining on the schedule. They hold a two-game lead over Gonzaga for the regular season title, which the Gaels are trying to capture outright for the first time since 2012. Their ability to keep the lead could hinge on Ducas and his shooting from beyond the arc, as he leads the conference with a 42.6% three-point percentage.
Â
The Gaels will look to keep the good times rolling on the road next week with a pair of road games, part of three-straight away from home. Saint Mary's first plays at Loyola Marymount on Thursday, February 9 at 6:00 pm on regional sports networks around the state before heading all the way up to Portland on February 11 for a showdown with the Portland Pilots. That contest will tip-off at 3:00 pm on CBS Sports Network.
