MORAGA, Calif. – A two-goal, two-assist opening weekend has earned Riley Lynch the Saint Mary's Student-Athlete of the Week Award for August 28.
Lynch opened the season with a bang on Friday night, scoring the first two goals of the season for the Gaels, and assisting on the fourth goal of the night on a cross to Jude Zamora. It was the first brace of Lynch's career and first five-point game.
On Lynch's first goal he fired a shot towards the right post and it caromed off the woodwork into the net for the Gaels first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. He struck again in the 36th minute after a long, downfield pass from freshman George Herbert that left Lynch all alone behind the Titans defense. The junior would put a hesitation move on the keeper to get past him, and chip in his second goal of the match for a 2-0 Saint Mary's lead.
In the Gaels second game of the season, Lynch set up Wade Muttitt for a goal in the first minute of action. The Chandler, Ariz. native worked his way deep into the penalty area and threaded a cross right in front of the goal mouth that was chipped in by Muttitt.
Lynch was named to the WCC All-Preseason Team, and in 2022 he started in 17 of 18 games played, was first on the team in assists (5) and shots (39), and was second in points (9).
The Gaels remain at home over Labor Day weekend, hosting Dartmouth on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and FDU on Monday at 1:00 p.m. You can purchase tickets to Saint Mary's Men's Soccer by clicking here.
