Eric Martinez Second Ever Men's Track and Field Athlete to Earn Shamrock Office Solutions Student-Athlete of the Week
MORAGA, Calif. - The Sophomore from San Dimas California, Eric Martinez, won his first Shamrock Office Solutions Student-Athlete of the Week award for the week of January 24th after winning the mile at the Portland Indoor Invitational this past Sunday.
Martinez was the first out of 32 competitors to finish the mile with a time of 4:21.14. He paced the Gaels in the event, with four of his teammates trailing him taking second through fifth place. Martinez's time was the 8th fastest mile over the past two seasons for the Gaels. With his first place finish, Eric led Saint Mary's to a second place team finish at the meet.
This was the first time in Martinez's intercollegiate career where he competed in the mile, dropping a total of 5.27 seconds from high school best at the Colt Classic his senior year.
Martinez is one of two men's track and field to have ever earned Shamrock Office Solutions Student-Athlete of the Week. The last time a male athlete from the Track and Field team had won this award was in 2019 when Nolan Dozier ran his personal best and broke the previous program record by 11 seconds in the 5000m with a time of 14:16.96 at the Oxy Invite.
