Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over Nevada on Saturday from the Tim Korth Tennis Complex. Prior to the match, Saint Mary's held a tree and plaque dedication ceremony in the memory of former tennis player Daniel Scafidi, who was killed in a car accident in December.
Saint Mary's lost just two matches the entire day, dropping the number-1 doubles match and the number-6 singles match. The Gaels' number-2 doubles team of Thomas Burgemeister and J.J. Whitlinger defeated Rudy Leuchner and McClune Wallace 8-6 and Josh Farley and Philip Laubscher defeated Ivan Anderson and Brett Bitzer in a tie-break, 9-8 (7-2), to give the Gaels the doubles point.
Saint Mary's won the first five singles matches in decisive fashion en route to the lopsided victory. Burgemeister, playing at number-1 for the first time in his career, posted a three set victory over Chad Stoloff, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. This was the only singles match the went to three sets. Frank Schmitt, the Gaels number-2, made quick work of Rudy Leucshner, 6-0, 6-3.
For Nevada, Brett Bitzer picked up the only victory for the Wolf Pack, a 6-3, 7-5 victory at the number-6 singles spot.
