After a scoreless first quarter, UC Davis scored 21 points in the second quarter for a 21-0 halftime lead. With Flanigan at the helm, the first score for the Aggies came on a season-high 28-yard run by Antar Mahasin, then Flanigan then hit Tommy Kays on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 3:16 left until halftime.

Flanigan finished the game 14-for-18 for 204 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Baragan completed 3-of-9 passes for 38 yards in the first quarter before being replaced by Flanigan. After the Gaels were forced to punt on the ensuing possession, Ejiro Evero blocked a punt and Angelo Caffese recovered it ball in the end zone for a touchdown and a 21-point lead for UCD heading into the intermission.

In the second half the Aggies added to their lead when Flanigan found Billy Zeier on a 3-yard touchdown pass with 4:37 remaining in the third quarter. The first score for Saint Mary's came when All-American safety Weston Borba intercepted a Flanigan pass and weaved his way 54 yards for a touchdown. Borba's interception marked the 16th in his career, which is second in the SMC annals, and his fifth career interception return for a touchdown.

UC Davis answered when Mahasin found the end zone for the second time in the game, this time from two yards out early in the fourth quarter. Saint Mary's quarterback Cordell Webb then connected with freshman Tom Steiner on a 30-yard touchdown strike on the next Gaels' possession.
