
Men's Basketball Defeats LMU 67-62 to Close Conference Schedule

Los Angeles, CA - Frederic Adjwanou posted his third double-double of the season to lead the Saint Mary's men's basketball team to a 67-62 victory over Loyola Marymount in West Coast Conference game on Saturday night from Gersten Pavilion. With the win Saint Mary's earned the fifth seed heading into next week's WCC Tournament. SMC is now 13-14 overall on the season and finished the conference season with a 6-8 record. LMU falls to 10-19 overall and 4-10 in WCC action.
With SMC leading 62-60 and 25 seconds left on the clock, Samuel Saint-Jean and Adjiwanou made three of four free throws to ice the game for the Gaels. After Saint-Jean converted one of two with 25 seconds left, LMU's Wes Wardrop's three-point attempts hit the back of the iron and was rebounded by Adjiwanou. Adjiwanou would make both free throws with 12 seconds remaining to give the Gaels a 65-60 advantage. Two late free throws by Saint-Jean aided in the five-point win.
Adjiwanou scored 18 points and added a game-high 11 rebounds in the Gaels win. Adjiwanou was one of four Gaels to score in double figures as Daniel Kickert scored 14 points and notched his first career double-double with 11 rebounds. The 11 boards for Kickert sets a new career-best for the freshman. Samuel Saint-Jean and Adam Caporn finished with 10 points each.
With the score tied at 18-18 with 9:26 left in the first half, Saint Mary's used an 15-3 run to open a 33-21 lead with 2:03 left until the intermission. The run was sparked by Tyler Herr's second three-pointer of the half. Loyola Marymount outscored the Gaels 8-2 over the final two minutes of the first half to cut the SMC lead to 35-29 at the break.
LMU cut the eight-point halftime deficit to 43-42 when Brandon Worthy stole a SMC inbounds pass and converted the lay up with 14:59 on the clock. The Lions regained the lead when Sherman Gay stole a Tyler Herr pass and followed with a dunk to give LMU a 48-47 lead with 13 minutes left to play.
Loyola Marymount extended its lead to 50-47 before the Gaels rebounded with a 10-3 run to take a 57-53 advantage with 8:25 left in the game. LMU's Charles Brown evened the score at 58-58 with a three-pointer with four minutes to play. The Gaels would score the next four points to open the lead to 62-58 with 2:35 left in the game.
Charles Brown of LMU lead all scorers with 19 points and he added four assists and five steals in the game. Brown was one of three players for the Lions to score in double figures as Sherman Gay and Brandon Worthy finished with 10 points each.
Saint Mary's will travel to San Diego, CA to compete in the West Coast Conference Tournament beginning on Friday, March 7. The Gaels, which are the tournament's number five seed, will take on the Santa Clara Broncos in the first round. Santa Clara enters the tournament as the eighth seed. Tip-off for the first round game will be at 8:30 PM in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
