Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's men's tennis team defeated the visiting Gonzaga Bulldogs by a final team score of 6-1. Despite losing the doubles point, the Gaels swept all six singles matches to claim their second straight victory. With the win, Saint Mary's improves to 4-9 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-6.
In double's play, the Gaels lost the overall team point despite Romain Lachens and Andre Sion defeating Gonzaga's Whitney and Cunningham at the #2 double's position by a final score of 8-5. At the #1 double's position, Saint Mary's tandem of J.J. Whitlinger and Thomas Burgemeister lost a hotly contested match to the Bulldog's pair of Cooper and Ernst by a final score of 8-6. Gonzaga captured the overall team point when Saint Mary's Martin Marechal and Josh Farley were defeated by Arthur and Penney by a final score of 8-4.
In single's action, Saint Mary's was victorious as they swept all the singles matches from Gonzaga. Thomas Burgemeister started the sweep after he improved his record to 8-5 at #1 singles as he defeated Gonzaga's Bryce Cooper by a final score of 7-5, 6-1. Romain Lachens then followed with a straight-sets victory over the Bulldog's Shaun Whitney at the #2 singles position by a final score of 6-3, 6-3. Also winning in straight-sets were freshmen Martin Marechal and Andre Sion at the #3 and #4 singles positions, respectively. Marechal defeated Reid Arthur 6-0, 6-3 and Sion defeated Drew Ernst 6-2, 6-2. J.J. Whitlinger was also victorious as he defeated the Bulldog's #5 single's player, Robert Penney, in straight-sets 7-5, 6-2. Josh Farley wrapped up the Gaels; sweep of the singles matches as he defeated the Bulldog's Brenden Cunningham at the #6 single's position by a final score of 6-4, 6-0.
Saint Mary's will return to the courts next week as they participate in four matches. The Gaels open the week by hosting Creighton on Tuesday, March 11 and Wayne State on Thursday, March 13 with both matches beginning at 3:00 PM on the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex. Saint Mary's then wraps up the week by traveling to southern California to play San Diego on Friday, March 15 at 12:30 PM and UC San Diego on Sunday, March 16 at 10:00 AM.
