Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's men's tennis team earned its second consecutive victory this week when it beat the visiting UC Davis Aggies 5-2. The Gaels swept all three doubles matches and were able to capture four of the six singles matches to earn the victory. With the win the Gaels improve to 4-5 on the season.
In singles action, Saint Mary's senior Rafael Lopez earned his second consecutive victory and third on the season when he beat Jayce Fitch in a marathon match 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) at the #1 position. At the #2 position the Gaels' Andre Sion was victorious as well as he defeated the Aggies Mike Chin by a score of 6-2, 6-3. At the #3 position Adam Fauvre beat Robert Wong in straight sets as well, winning by a score of 6-1, 6-1. The other Gael earning a victory was Vincent LeBorgne, the Saint Mary's #4 player defeated Ross Barasch by a score of 6-3, 6-2.
The two matches dropped by the Gaels came at the expense of the #5 and #6 players. At the #5 position J.J. Whitlinger fell to Casey McMakin 6-2, 6-2, while Dino Paul Ferrari lost to Blake Roberts in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles action Saint Mary's was able to capture all three matches. At the #1 doubles position the duo of Whitlinger and LeBorgne beat the Aggies pair of Kyle Trinosky and Barasch 8-2. At the #2 position the Saint Mary's tandem of Lopez and Fauvre defeated Bastian Bartels and Chin by a score of 8-4. The Gaels' pair of Martin Marechal and Ferrari also won by a score of 8-4 as they beat Kyle and Casey McMakin.
Saint Mary's (4-5) returns to action on Sunday, March 7 when they host the University of Pacific at 2:30 PM at the Korth Tennis Complex on the Saint Mary's campus.
