This Week: The men's and women's cross country teams will head to Palo Alto to participate in the 31st annual Stanford Invitational on Saturday. The Saint Mary's men's team will run in the 8k race while the women will partake in the 5k run. Both races will be held on the Stanford Golf Course.
Scouting the Competition: For the second time in three races the Gaels will face off against the highly touted Stanford Cardinal. The Gaels will be competing against the two-time defending national champions in the men's 8k race. The men's team will also have to face the No. 10-ranked Cal Poly Mustangs. On the women's side, the Gaels will be competing against the likes of UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State and West Coast Conference foes USF and Santa Clara.
Competing Schools: Men: adidas Transports, Cal Coast, #10 Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, Claremont Mudd Scripps, Concordia, Loyola Marymount, Sacramento State, San Francisco State, Santa Clara, Santiago Canyon, Simon Fraser, #2 Stanford, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, University of British Columbia, University of Victoria.
Women: Bowling Green, Cal Baptist, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chapman, Claremont Mudd Scripps, Concordia, Fresno State, Nevada, Redlands, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Santiago Canyon, Sonoma State, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, USF, Yavapai.
A Look at SMC Head Coach Randy Rau: Rau enters his sixth season as the head men's and women's cross country coach. In his first season at the helm he was named WCC Coach of the Year. Under his tutelage, runners have earned four All-WCC selections, a Freshman of the Year honoree and five honorable mention accolades. Individually, both the men and women's school records have been shattered. Members of his men's team have posted 29 of the 30 fastest times in the history of the program.
Last Week: The Gaels trained through the entire week due to having a bye on the schedule.
Next Week for the Gaels: SMC will train through the entire week as the team does not participate in any meets. The Gaels will return to action on Saturday, October 9 when they travel south to San Diego to participate in the Mountain West Conference Pre-Championship Meet.
