| In just his first season at the collegiate ranks, men's soccer freshman midfielder Carlos Diaz (Napa, CA) has etched his name atop the SMC single-season annals. With his assist on a Matthew Fitzgerald goal against Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Diaz became the single-season record-holder with 10 on the year. The previous record of nine was held by the trio of Juan Guarda, Adam Bliss and Jon Hinkin. On the weekend, the rookie assisted all three Gael goals. In Saint Mary's 2-1 victory over San Diego, Diaz connected with fellow newcomer Michael Clegg twice. At the 38-minute mark, Diaz set-up Clegg's breakaway goal off a pass from senior Daniel Smith. Diaz helped the Gaels put the game away when he found Clegg in the penalty area off a throw-in with three-minutes remaining. Diaz has given the Gaels offense a shot in the arm all season long. The newcomer is ranked fourth in the nation in assists (10) and assists per game (0.83). Diaz has been instrumental to the success of SMC in conference play as well. The newcomer has been directly responsible for Saint Mary's last seven goals by handing out six assists and netting one goal during that time. During West Coast Conference action, Diaz leads the conference with seven assists and an assist per game. Saint Mary's will return to action on Friday, October 28 to host the No. 8-ranked Santa Clara Broncos. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Saint Mary's Stadium. | ||
