Men's Tennis Wins in Day One of LMU Invite

Los Angeles, CA - The Saint Mary's men's tennis team defeated their final West Coast Conference opponent in the regular season today when they defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions 6-1. The Gaels will compete in one final warm-up before the WCC Championships tomorrow when they face off against New Mexico State.

They Gaels competed in a tough doubles competition. Achim Christner and Alp Ozpinar were defeated 8-4. The Gaels fought back and won the doubles point in two very close matches. Seniors Andre Sion and Adam Fauvre won their match by the close score of 9-7. Joel Kusnierz and Yury Platonov sealed the Gaels double point as they won a very close match by the score of 9-8 (7-2).

Saint Mary's faired much better in singles matches. The Gaels won five of the six possible singles matches. Kusnierz won his match in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Senior Sion dropped his first set 3-6 but fought back in the final two sets and won his match 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Senior Fauvre followed suit by winning his singles match in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. Fauvre has won his last four singles matches. Platonov also won in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Andrea Zannoni won his singles match 6-3, 6-0. Zannoni has been getting it together for the Gaels; winning his last three singles matches.

Christner fell in three sets. This gave the Gaels the final score of 6-1. Saint Mary's will compete in one final tune up before the West Coast Conference Championships next weekend. The Gaels face off against New Mexico State tomorrow.
