Moraga, CA - The men's tennis team continued their hot streak at the Korth Tennis Complex this afternoon, defeating the UC Davis Aggies 6-1. Saint Mary's improves to 7-3 on the year with the win, and have posted a perfect 3-0 record when playing on their home court. With the loss UC Davis drops to 6-6 on the season.
The Aggies swept doubles play as many of the Gael players paired up with new partners for their respective matches. There was at least one freshman on each of the three pairs, as freshman Gerald Ellison teamed up with Andrea Zannoni at No. 1, freshman Matt Welty joined Marek Dvorak at No.2, and the freshmen team of Lucas Tirelli and Youssef El Bouzkouri wrapped up play at No.3. Although Saint Mary's was unable to post a win in doubles action, Ellison and Zannoni were just shy of recording a win, losing 8-7 (7-8) to UC Davis' Henry Landes and Justin Garcia.
After losing the doubles point, Saint Mary's increased their level of play, blasting past the Aggies with a perfect 5-0 sweep in singles competition. Joel Kusnierz played at his usual No. 1 spot, defeating Henry Landes in a close match, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Tirelli blew away his opponent at the No. 2 position, crushing Michael Reiser 6-1, 6-1.
The remaining four matches resulted in three sets or a tie break, with Dvorak tabbing a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Justin Garcia, Zannoni defeating his opponent 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, Achim Christner taking down Nick Lopez, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) and El Bouzkouri winning 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) over Tyler Lee. Zannoni's victory over Justin Garcia clinched the team win for the Gaels, as he was the fourth singles match to finish play.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Sunday, March 2 as they face the Santa Clara Broncos at 12:00 PM.
