Los Angeles, CA - No. 66 Saint Mary's men's tennis team faced the Loyola Marymount Lions in a conference match at the LMU Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Gaels defeated the Lions, 5-2, on LMU's Senior Day to close out the regular season. Saint Mary's (14-6) will travel to Santa Clara next weekend to compete in the West Coast Conference Championships.
All three of the doubles competitions ended with a score of 8-4, as the Gaels posted to of the three wins. In doubles, Joel Kusnierz and Lucas Tirelli defeated Jacek Twarowski and Sam Tadevosian on court one, 8-4, and Marek Dvorak and Achim Christner beat Ivan Lopez and Johan Berhof at the No. 2 spot, 8-4, securing the doubles point. LMU's Renzo Maggi and Nick Von Der Ahe won their match at No. 3 doubles over Andrea Zannoni and Youssef El Bouzkouri, 8-4.
The Gaels continued their solid play into singles where they won four of the six matches. At No. 1, Kusinerz defeated Twarowski in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, while Tirelli topped Lopez on court two, also in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. At the three spot Dvorak earned a victory over Tadevosian, winning 6-4, 6-0.
At the bottom half of the singles line-up, LMU's Berhof defeated Christner to give the Lions their first point of the day, 7-6, 6-2, while Zannoni recorded a convincing win over Renzo Maggi, 6-1, 6-0. The Lions' Stefan Nikolic won his match against El Bouzkouri at the No. 6 slot, earning just their second point of the day, 6-2, 6-3.
Saint Mary's will next head to Santa Clara, CA April 18-20 to participate in the WCC Championships.
