Mendoza Continues to Re-write Record Book

Seattle, WA – For the second straight race senior Mario Mendoza set a new Saint Mary's record, with a time of 24:35. Mendoza battled through wet and cold conditions finishing first for Saint Mary's and 16th overall in the Sundodger Invitational hosted by Washington Saturday morning.
For the men it was all-around strong morning as all five of the runners finished with new personal records. Senior Nick Shea finished second for the Gaels and 40th overall with the second fastest time in Saint Mary's history, clocking in at 25:06.
Sophomore Mark Blucher came in third for SMC and 67th overall with a personal best time of 26:14. Senior David Stiles finished 82nd overall with a time of 26:37, and Brad Alban came in 95th with a time of 28:28.
Mendoza's new record time of 24:35 breaks his two week old record of 25:20 by over 40 seconds. Finishing in the top spot for the men's race was Eastern Washington's Paul Limpf who finished the race in a time of 23:33. As a team the men finished eighth out of 10 teams, with a team score of 205.
On the women's side senior Karrie Hagedorn had another strong run, coming in 36th overall with a time of 22:06, which is good enough for the third fastest time in Saint Mary's history for a 6k.
Washington native, sophomore Tess Granneman placed second for the Gaels and 68th overall with a time of 23:30, which is the second fastest time of her career, just one second behind the PR she set two weeks ago in Davis, CA.
Freshman Natalie Sojka set a personal record when she finished with a time of 23:32, which placed her 69th. Erin Riley and Kim Cunningham finished 80th and 80th overall with times of 24:32 and 25:02 respectively. Madison Dengler and Jade Lewis finished the day 92nd and 94th overall with a time of 25:15 for Dengler, and 25:53 for Lewis. Lewis' time of 25:53 was a new personal record.
SMC's women's team finished eighth out of ninth with a total of 236 points.
The Gaels will return to the trails when they head to the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, CA to participate in the Stanford Invitational.
