Saint Mary's will face the Pilots on October 30 at 7:00 p.m. from Merlo Field, on the Portland campus. On Sunday, November 1, the Gaels will take on the Bulldogs at 1:00 p.m. from the Gonzaga Soccer Field. |

![]() | Portland Pilots Update In the first round of conference play, the Gaels hosted Portland at Saint Mary's on October 4. At the time, the Pilots were ranked No. 18 nationally and the Gaels held them to a 1-1 tie. Senior Jason Coehlo scored the goal for the Gaels on a shot from 15 yards out, the first goal of his career. Portland outshot Saint Mary's 12-9 and had 13 corner kicks, but the Gaels defense held strong. SMC goalkeeper Doug Herrick notched five saves in 110 minutes. SMC took nine shots, with four shots on goal. Currently, the Pilots are third in the West Coast Conference with a 3-2-2 record, 8-3-3 overall. Leading Portland's offense with five goals and five assists (15 points) is Collen Warner. Ryan Luke is tied with Warner for the team lead in goals (5) and Jarad VanSchaik is second behind Warner in points (12). In goal for Portland is Austin Guerrero who has logged 1320 minutes and recorded 49 saves, three shutouts, and a 1.02 goals against average. |
Gonzaga Bulldogs Update On October 2, in the first meeting of the season between Saint Mary's and Gonzaga, the Gaels shutout the Bulldogs 2-0. Redshirt junior Dylan Leslie scored both goals for the Gaels, with both coming in the first half. In the 16th minute, Jason Coehlo served the ball into the middle and found Trevor Newquist for the shot. Newquist's shot came off the crossbar and Leslie was there for the rebound goal. Leslie's second goal came unassisted in the 29th minute off a free kick from 30 yards out. The Gaels outshot Gonzaga 12-10 and Doug Herrick recorded five saves and his second shutout of the season. Currently, Gonzaga is tied for fourth with Loyola Marymount in conference with a 2-4-1 record. Overall, the Bulldogs are 5-6-3. Leading the team in points is Tye Perdido with 13 points on five goals and three assists. Scott Barnum has been the primary goalkeeper for Gonzaga, logging 1226:31 minutes and nothing 72 saves and a 1.25 goals against average. | ![]() |
![]() | Newquist Scores Twice in 2-1 Victory Over the Broncos Midfielder Trevor Newquist scored the game-winner with 17 seconds left in overtime to lift the Gaels over Santa Clara for the second time in two days. In the Sunday game, Newquist scored both goals for the Gaels, with the first coming in the 65th minute, giving SMC the 2-1 victory. The midfielder headed in both goals, the first off a free kick from midfield, and the game-winner came off a corner kick. With the two goals, Newquist moves into a four-way tie for the team lead in goals scored with three and second in points with eight. The freshman from San Diego was named this week's Saint Mary's player of the week for his efforts last weekend. |
Leslie Assisted in All Four Goals in Last Three Games Midfielder Dylan Leslie is having an outstanding season after missing last season due to injury. In the last three games for SMC, Leslie has assisted in each one of the goals scored (4). Against LMU and Santa Clara, Leslie served up three perfectly placed corner kicks to find SMC players for three of the goals. The fourth goal came off Leslie's free kick from midfield against Santa Clara. The redshirt junior from Lancaster has notched seven assists, which puts him first in the conference in assists. Leslie's 0.50 assists per game average is also a WCC best. Leslie leads the team in points (13) and assists (7), and is in a four-way tie for the lead in goals (3). | ![]() |
![]() | Herrick Remains At the Top Doug Herrick remains at the top of the WCC leader board in goals against average for the fifth straight week. After last week's sweep of Santa Clara, Herrick's goals against average stands at 0.73. Herrick has played every minute for the Gaels in goal and has accumulated 45 saves, five shutouts, and a 9-2-3 record. Herrick's five shutouts is second best in the WCC, one short of San Diego's Kelin Briones (6). Herrick earned WCC Player of the Week honors for the week of September 28-October 4 for his conference leading statistics and outstanding play against Gonzaga and No. 18 Portland. |
Gaels Move Up to No. 4 in Far West Poll Saint Mary's jumped to No. 4 in this week's NSCAA Far West Regional poll. This marks the fifth straight week the Gaels have been amongst the top-10 in the Far West Region. Currently, the Gaels are the highest ranked WCC team in the poll with San Diego right behind them at No. 5. Last week, the Gaels were No. 8 in the poll after losing to USD (0-2) and beating LMU (1-0). | ![]() |
SMC Receiving 29 Votes in NSCAA National Poll After the sweep of Santa Clara, the Gaels received 29 votes in this week's NSCAA National Poll, putting them two spots away from the Top-25 at No. 27. The Gaels went from receiving one vote last week to receiving 29 this week. The Gaels are receiving the most votes of all the WCC schools; USD (28) and Portland (3) are receiving votes as well. Saint Mary's is also receiving votes (7) in the SoccerTimes.com national poll this week for the third time this season. |
The Gaels Move Up in RPI Rankings The Saint Mary's men's soccer team is ranked No. 40 in the latest RPI rankings, as released on Monday, October 26. The Gaels jumped from No. 67 to No. 40, and they currently stand as the third-highest ranked WCC school in RPI behind San Diego (No. 5) and Loyola Marymount (No. 15). |
A Look Back at Last Week's Sweep of Santa Clara Last weekend, SMC beat Santa Clara twice within 48 hours, giving the Gaels their second and third victories over the Broncos all-time. The Gaels and Broncos faced off twice last weekend, Friday's game was at Santa Clara and Sunday's game was at home at Saint Mary's Stadium. The Gaels swept the Broncos, improving to 9-2-3 overall, 5-1-1 in conference play. On Friday night, the Gaels traveled to Santa Clara and posted their fifth shutout of the season, beating the Broncos 1-0. Redshirt sophomore Tom Mohoric had the lone goal for the Gaels, a header into the back of the net from Dylan Leslie's corner kick. Sunday's game was another exciting match-up between the two teams. The Gaels scored first in the 65th minute when Leslie took a free kick from the midfield line and found the head of freshman Trevor Newquist. Santa Clara answered with a goal by Erik Hurtado in the 87th minute, sending the game into overtime. With 17 seconds left in the first overtime, Leslie kicked a corner kick and again, found the head of Newquist, giving the Leslie-Newquist duo their second goal of the day. |
