Moraga, CA – Troy Channing is in elite company following his record-breaking freshman campaign for the Gaels. He is the first Saint Mary's player to finish the season as the triple-crown leader in the West Coast Conference. Channing led the WCC with 20 homeruns, 75 RBI, and his .379 average tied with Santa Clara's Geoff Kline.
Channing is only the third player since 1985 to lead the WCC in average, RBI and homeruns. The last player to do it was Pepperdine's Chad Tracy in 2005, and USF's Taggert Bozied in 1999. Channing is only the sixth player in Saint Mary's history to lead the team in all three categories.
Channing finished the year setting the new Saint Mary's single season record with 20 homeruns and 75 RBI. He finished the season with the sixth highest average in a single season with a .379. His impressive totals do not end there, as he finished first in total bases (149) and slugging percentage (.723). He also finished second in on-base percentage (.463) and sixth in hits (55).
Recently Channing was named one of 16 semi-finalists to the Dick Howser Trophy, given to the nations top college baseball player; he was one of two freshmen on the list. He will be playing summer ball in the Northwoods League playing for the Madison Mallards.
