Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's College of California head men's basketball coach Randy Bennett announced today that Eran Ganot has been hired as an assistant coach, following the departure of Kyle Smith to become the head men's basketball coach at Columbia University. Ganot will begin his second stint with the Gaels beginning June 1, 2010.
With a vacancy in the staff, Bennett hired Ganot, who was an assistant coach at the University of Hawaii the past three years. Prior to being hired at Hawaii as the Director of Basketball Operations in 2006-07, Ganot worked at Saint Mary's for three seasons (2003-06) as a volunteer in the basketball program.
"Eran worked three years at Saint Mary's and we are looking forward to his return to the program where he got his start," said Bennett. "He is very good with people, he's very familiar with our program, and he has a great reputation as a young coach in our profession."
As an assistant coach at Hawaii, Ganot was responsible for recruiting, scheduling and player development with an emphasis on the guards. He was also involved in scouting of future opponents and film breakdown with players.
Ganot, who served as the director of basketball operations in 2006-07 under long-time head coach Riley Wallace, was promoted to full-time assistant coach beginning in the 2007-08 season under head coach Bob Nash.
Ganot earned a bachelor's degree in economics and sociology/anthropology at Pennsylvania's Swarthmore College in 2003. He was a four-year letterman for the Division III school and twice served as team captain, as selected by his teammates and coaches. A gym rat who played all five positions at Swarthmore, Ganot received the Dick Beppler Memorial Award his senior year which recognized outstanding contribution to the men's basketball team.
A 1999 graduate of Tenafly High School in New Jersey, Ganot was a two-time all-league first-team pick and was named to the all-county team as a senior. During his senior season, he helped Tenafly to a 22-4 league record and its first league title in 32 years.
Smith had been an assistant coach and the associate head coach at Saint Mary's since the Bennett arrived at Saint Mary's in 2001. During that time, the Gaels posted a 183-103 record and made four trips to the post season, including a Sweet 16 run in 2010. The success of the SMC basketball program resulted in Smith being named the head coach at Columbia on May 2, 2010.
