
Cross Country Travels To Sacramento This Weekend

What's On Schedule: This week the Saint Mary's men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Sacramento, CA to participate in the Hornet Jamboree hosted by Sacramento State at Granite Regional Park. The women's collegiate 5K race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The men's race will get underway at 10:30 a.m. and covers four miles.
The Competition: The collegiate field includes Division I teams from Sacramento State, UC Davis, California, San Francisco, and Pacific, as well as Non-Division I teams Sonoma State, Academy of Art, Dominican, and William Jessup.
Who's Hot: Men's junior Robb Van Wyck finished first for the Gaels last week and 21st overall in the San Francisco Invitational hosted by San Francisco. In that race, Van Wyck finished with a time of 25:29.00, which is a his best finish at Golden Gate Park. On the women's side, sophomore Rosie Smith finished 14th overall and first for the Gaels with a new personal-best time of 18:24.00 in the 5K, beating her old personal-record by several seconds.
This Week's Lineup: Racing for the men this week are Bradley Alban, Dylan Donohoe, James Hayes, Jordan Lerma, Robb Van Wyck and Antonio Venegas. At this race last year Alban finished with a time of 22:10.00, Hayes finished with a time of 23:12.00, Lerma clocked in with a time of 22:42.00, while Van Wyck finished with a time of 21:04.00, and Venegas finished with a time of 23:47.00.
On the women's side the Gaels will be without Michelina Friend, Kelly Renfroe and Erin Riley. Running for Saint Mary's will be freshmen , Alex Choy, Alicia Doohan, and Maureen May. Also running will be Erin Burke, Tess Grannemann, Elizandra Obando, Rosie Smith, and Natalie Sojka and Maria Alqvist. At this race last season Grannemann finished with a time of 18:35.00 which was her fastest time all year in the 5K. Smith finished with a time of 18:50, Sojka finished with a time of 19:41, while Burke clocked in with a time of 20:41.
Last Week's Action: The Saint Mary's men's and women's cross country programs kicked off the 2010 season on Saturday, September 4, at the 18th Annual San Francisco Invitational hosted by San Francisco at Golden Gate Park.
The women's team got things started for SMC finishing fifth overall out of nine teams in the 5K run. Leading the way for Saint Mary's was sophomore Rosie Smith who finished 14th overall, with a time of 18:24.00. Senior Tess Grannemann finished second for the Gaels and 17th overall with a time of 18:33.00. Finishing third for SMC and making her debut for the Gaels was freshman Alicia Doohan, who placed 31st overall with a time of 19:38.00. Rounding out the top-five for Saint Mary's was red-shirt sophomore Mariah Alqvist, who placed 33rd overall with a time of 19:41.00. Behind her in 34th was junior Natalie Sojka, who clocked in with a time of 19:48.00.
On the men's side, the Gaels competed in the 8K and finished in sixth place out of eight teams, with an average time of 27:13. Pacing the Gaels was junior Robb Van Wyck, who finished 21st overall with a time of 25:29.00. Coming in second for Saint Mary's was senior Brad Alban, who placed 30th overall with a time of 26:42.00. Sophomore James Hayes placed third for the Gaels, coming in 32nd overall with a time of 27:17.00. Rounding out the top-five was freshman Marco Siragusa, who placed 33rd overall with a time of 27:20.00. Placing fifth for SMC was sophomore Antonio Venegas, who placed 39th overall with a time of 28:48. Freshman Chris Garcia placed 40th overall with a time of 29:06 in his Saint Mary's debut.
What's On Tap: The Gaels will take next weekend off to prepare for the Stanford Invitational, which is scheduled for Saturday, September 25 in Palo Alto, CA at the Stanford Golf Course. Head coach Marty Kinsey sees the Stanford Invitational as one of the bigger meets of the year. The 8K race for the men is scheduled to begin around 10:30 a.m., while the women's 6K race is slated for an 11:30 a.m. start time.

Eastbound: Take I-80 East to US-50 East; Exit Howe Avenue/Power Inn Rd; Go right onto Howe Ave/Power Inn Rd; Make a left at the third light - Cucamonga Ave and follow the road into the park.
Westbound: Take 1-80 West to Bus-80/99 South to US-50 East; Exit Howe Avenue/Power Inn Rd; Go right onto Howe Ave/Power Inn Rd; Make a left at the third light - Cucamonga Ave and follow the road into the park.
Northbound: Take US-99 or I-5 North to Sacramento; Take US-50 East; Exit Howe Avenue/Power Inn Rd; Go right onto Howe Ave/Power Inn Rd; Make a left at the third light - Cucamonga Ave and follow the road into the park.
