
WTEN: Gaels Finish First Day of Cal Nike Invitational

BERKELEY, Calif.- The Saint Mary's women's tennis team opened up their fall season Friday at the 2011 Cal Nike Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Six Gaels competed on day one of the event, with singles and doubles both being played throughout the day.
No. 77 Jenny Jullien played particularly well for the Gaels on the day, winning both of her singles matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the top (Gold) singles division. The sophomore from France defeated Arizona State's Sianna Simmons in her first match, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0, and then topped Nevada's Michel Okhremchuk, 6-4, 7-5.
Transfer Jade Frampton played her first matches as a Gael and got a tough draw in the Gold division. After defeating Julia Hansen of Pacific 7-5, 7-5, Frampton was put up against the No. 1 player in the country in Cal's Jana Juricova. The sophomore from Utah battled, but ultimately fell to Juricova 6-3, 6-2.
Freshman Catherine Leduc (Quebec, Canada) got her first taste of college tennis in the Gold division, defeating San Jose State's Sabastiani Leon 6-4, 6-2 before falling to No. 57 Annie Goransson of Cal, 6-1, 6-2.
Senior Anna Chkhikvishvili dropped both of her singles matches in the Gold division, falling to ASU's Joanna Smith, 6-3, 6-3, and Alison Ramos of USC, 6-4, 6-2.
Freshman Liz Searl was drawn into the Blue singles division and received a first round bye. Her match in the round of 16 went to three-sets, but Searl ultimately fell to Juliette Legendre of Nevada, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Senior Molly Aloia also received a first round bye in the Blue division and went on to defeat San Jose State's Chau Truong 6-4, 6-2 to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals.
Jullien and Frampton teamed up in the Gold division and fell to Sacramento State's Clarisse Baca and Maria Meliuk 9-7, while Chkhikvishvili and Searl also played in the Gold division, falling to the Cal duo of Alice Duranteau and Zsofi Susanyi, 8-5.
Leduc and Aloia were paired in the Blue doubles division and defeated Cal's Cessi Estlander and Stephany Chang, 8-3, to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals.
The Gaels return to action on Saturday with day two of the Cal Nike Invitational.
